THE BALLAD OF SCOLAI & CAEMYL - lyrics and music by Nathan and Amanda McCartney
There was a shady merchant Three daughters did he have The oldest was a beauty Who was courted by the lads The youngest was a charmer Finding men around the port But the middle was Caemyl And not the charming, courting sort
She followed 'round her father Merchanting from port to port Her father sought her suitors But they never came to court Her father, he exclaimed With a heavy hearted sigh "I suppose I will be with you Until the day I die."
One night while playing poker With a very wealthy man The father bet it all For he'd been dealt a lucky hand The rich man called his bet And he raised him even more The father said, "Let's bet Caemyl To even out the score!"
The rich man took his offer With a poker-faced hush The father had a full house But not a royal flush The rich man took Caemyl And they went along their way The father had to tell his wife What happened there that day
The rich man took Caemyl And set her straight to work To cook and clean the ship While his crew did leer and lurk But then, there was Scolai A charmer with appeal Who had his favor set upon The maiden named Caemyl
Chorus Scolai and Caemyl Are the strangest of cohorts She's not the marrying kind And he's not the courting sort They keep each other's secrets Swearing they will never squeal They travel on like vagabonds Scolai and Caemyl
One night on open seas As they did sail along The rich man drank himself Into the great beyond They rifled through his pockets Taking all that had been his Scolai said, "He won't need it Considering where he is."
Now, all the crew was sleeping So who was there to know When Scolai and Caemyl Gave his body the heave-ho? Caemyl answered questions with "He sleepwalks, so I heard." She was the only wench So they took her at her word
The ship took port, the pair took flight And ne'er did look behind With much now in their pockets And nothing much in mind They found a town and settled down Or relatively near No one asks, so they don't tell Just how they both got here
Well, that was many years ago In another place and time The sailors are all gone now They've sailed for the last time But Scolai and Caemyl They still wander hand in heart I suppose they will just live in sin Until death do them part
